China to reduce number of illiterates by 10 mn

Beijing: China plans to reduce the number of illiterate people in the
country by at least two million each year over the next five years,
the ministry of education said.

"There are around 50 million illiterate people in China, most of who
live in remote and rural areas with poor transportation and
telecommunications," Xinhua quoted an official as saying.

The ministry has issued new guidelines on compiling special teaching
material to help the people learn how to read and write.

The guidelines also include basic arithmetic skills and tips for daily
life, with the help of which an illiterate person would be able to
catch up with the fast-changing society, the ministry said.

The government also plans to use videos for home study.

In 1949, the number of illiterates accounted for 80 percent of China's
600 million people. IANS
