Exports from SSI Sector


The share of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Exports, as compared to organized sector, has remained fairly constant in those export segments which are primarily based in MSME Sector, such as agricultural and processed food products, engineering goods, lac based products, leather and leather products, readymade garments, etc.  However, the share has come down due to the growth of industry (MSMEs becoming large scale industries) in such industries as basic chemicals, pharmaceuticals & cosmetics and plastic products etc.

The contribution of Small Scale Industries/ Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in GDP, as per latest available data is:

   As per Quick Results of the latest census of MSME Sector (Fourth Census), conducted with reference year 2006-07, wherein data was collected till 2009 and the results published in 2011; the total number of persons employed in the Micro, Small and Medium Sector increased to 594.61 lakh as compared to 249.32 lakh in the Third census of Small Scale Industries, conducted with reference year  2001-02.

The long term policy is outlined in the 11th Five Year Plan Document, recommendations of the Prime Minister’s Task Force (2010) and 12th Five Year Plan Document. The incorporated areas include Policy / Programme support, Institutional matters and legal/regulatory measures for the growth of MSME sector such as enactment of the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006, credit support, infrastructure/technology/skill development, cluster development, marketing support, rehabilitation and exit policy, the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Programme (NMCP), SME exchange, Public Procurement Policy for Micro and Small Enterprises, etc.

This information was given by the Union Cabinet Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Shri Virbhadra Singh in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.
