college principals on Wednesday to clarify several queries regarding
admissions.
The meeting was a pre-admission briefing from the vice chancellor,
during which he also handed out CDs containing the Class 12 results to
college principals.
Several colleges had sent queries regarding the OBC cutoffs to Dinesh
Singh. The VC made it clear to colleges that they should not relax the
differential merit between OBCs and general candidates by more than
10% to ensure that all seats are filled up.
The colleges had also been asked by Singh to make extra efforts so
that the admission procedure would be easier for everyone. Last year,
around 20 DU colleges had failed to fill up 50% of their OBC quota
seats.
During the meeting, Dinesh Singh and his team also shared details of
how the semester system would be implemented for this academic session
at the university.
Pro-vice chancellor Vivek Suneja gave a presentation during the
meeting with the psychology programme as an example in order to inform
colleges about various criteria like time-tables, number of tutorials,
etc.
College principals were also informed about new initiatives that the
university was taking up such as sending meritorious DU students to
study abroad during the new session.
The VC said that the university was planning to send three batches of
25 students each for study tours to Australia, China and also a
three-city tour to Colombo, Dhaka and Kathmandu this October.
DU will also conduct a selection process after the classes have
commenced in July to decide which students will be sent abroad for
studying.
Assuming that the students will be in need of financial assistance, DU
has already spoken to the Australia-India Institute in Melbourne to
host the first batch of students from DU.
Meera Ramachandran, principal of Gargi College said that the meeting
had been called primarily to address the queries that colleges had.
"There were quite a few clarifications that were sought by college
principals on various issues related to admissions. The VC handed out
CDs containing the class 12 results along with an analysis that will
help colleges in preparing cutoffs as there were no admission forms
this year. Colleges also had queries regarding the OBC reservation
with respect to individual colleges' additional eligibility criteria.
The VC said to this that colleges would have to abide by the rules
laid down by the government," she said.
Ramachandran further added that since the syllabi for various
programmes had been prepared by different departments at a different
time, the university administration also apprised up of the semester
structure and implementation module.
