Delhi HC asks IP varsity to take over medical college

New Delhi: The Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) has
been asked by the Delhi High Court to explore the feasibility of
taking over the Army Medical College.

The high court had been upset with the medical college after the
institute had decided to stick to its decision of holding an entrance
test for the current academic session to avoid an order by the Supreme
Court.

A division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv who
have asked the university to explore the possibility of taking over
the college said that the conduct of the medical college did not only
violate university regulations but also clearly defied the order of
the Supreme Court.

The university registrar was also summoned by the bench to personally
appear before it on June 1 and explain the possibility of GGSIPU
taking over the Army Medical College.

The court has also impleaded the Medical Council of India (MCI)
seeking details of the procedure for affiliating the college to the
university.

The order from the High Court came after a student had submitted a
plea alleging that a recent order of the Supreme Court that was
directed at the college was not being followed by the college.

The Supreme Court had ordered the college to not reserve 100% of its
seats for wards of Army personnel but only 5% of the total number of
seats for them, keeping the rest 95% open for wards of civilians.

Counsel Aman Hingorani appeared on behalf of the student and told the
court that despite the orders of the Supreme Court, the college had
issued an advertisement saying that the management had decided to not
take any admission in the MBBS class for the current academic session,
owing it to financial difficulties.

The GGSIPU counsel said that the university had issued a notification
to the college for withdrawal of its advertisement as it was against
an earlier order of the Supreme Court.
