CBI should probe AMU vice chancellor - MHRD

New Delhi: A recommendation by the Human Resource Development (HRD)
Ministry has been accepted by President Pratibha Patil to form a two
member enquiring committee to look into the allegations against
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis.

The ministry recommended the president that the Central Bureau of
Investigation (CBI) be allowed to inquire into the allegations within
three months. It also suggested that the findings of one of the two
members of the committee against Professor Azis be referred to the
Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).

The AMU vice chancellor had been charged with financial
irregularities, violation of rules on Executive Council meetings,
graft, poor academic record as well as plagiarism in his D.Sc. thesis.
The university had also been closed several times due to violence and
unrest during his tenure.

It had been decided by the ministry to send the case to the CBI after
two inquiry committees had been set up for the purpose and both were
unable to arrive at a conclusion on the charges.

Both members of the first committee had resigned as they had disagreed
with the procedure itself. The two-judge panel of the next committee
had ended up giving a split verdict. This had involved Justice B.A.
Khan giving his verdict in favor of Prof. Azis while Justice A.N.
Divecha found him guilty.

The recommendations had been sent by the HRD ministry to the President
as she is the Visitor of all Central universities.
