DU semester row - science students suffering

New Delhi: Science students who had joined the Delhi University (DU)
last year when the semester system was introduced for the first time
for undergraduate science courses are already tired over the row that
the issue had created.

Several science students have said that they have not managed to learn
or retain much in the first academic session that has already ended.

Ananta Joshi, a first year student of the B.Sc. programme at the
university said that the students were not able to get enough time for
understanding anything in the subject, let alone go deep into the
subject matter.

"All we did was simply collected photocopies of notes from our seniors
and memorized them. We did not even get the time to know students from
other classes and were not able to even participate in
extras-curricular activities," Joshi said.

He further stated that their mathematics teacher had fallen ill, as a
result of which five different teachers had tried to unsuccessfully
fill the position. The students again had been unable to understand or
absorb anything.

Another student of St. Stephen's College, Rocky Chhikara said that
their classes were held between 8:40 AM to 5:00 PM everyday without a
single lunch break. Even after that, students were expected to stay
back and prepare their practical files.

Teachers at the varsity had also complained that they hadn't been
getting much time for external examinations.

Assistant Professor of B.Sc. Electronics at Zakir Hussain College,
Prof. N.K. Jain said that the new semester calendar had already
created several problems for both students and teachers.

"The admission season is now overlapping with the examinations. It is
going to be extremely difficult for teachers to manage," Jain said.

Many science students at the university also complained of not being
able to do their practicals well either.
