MCD, DU students join on thalassemia awareness campaign

New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will collaborate
with the students of Delhi University (DU) to spread awareness on
thalassemia, mayor Rajni Abbi said here on Friday.

Thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder affecting over 30 million
children in the country, requires blood transfusion every 15 days as
the bone marrow fails to form a part of the vital hemoglobin protein
carrying oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

"Awareness is the most important preventive measure for thalassemia.
Awareness will help people know that they need to get a test done in
the right age group," Abbi said at a function organised by Thalassemia
Control Project and India Population Project-VIII to mark an awareness
week from May 2 to May 8 at a Health Centre in Dilshad Garden, east
Delhi.

"Students play a very important role in spreading this awareness. The
MCD will collaborate with Delhi University students to spread
awareness about the disease in their locality through street plays,
and other ways," Abbi added. IANS
