reservation criteria, allotting 50% of seats to be reserved for Muslim
applicants.
The new reservation guidelines issued by the varsity will be
applicable form the 2011-12 academic session.
The new guidelines come after an amendment in Statute 39 of the Jamia
Millia Islamia Act, 1988 on February 22 that had deemed the university
to be a minority educational institution. The amendment was in
pursuance of the order by the National Commission for Minority
Educational Institutions.
According to the new rules, 30 percent of total seats in each
programme at the varsity will be earmarked for Muslim applicants, 10
percent for Muslim women applicants and 10 percent for Other Backward
Classes and Scheduled Tribes, as under the Central government list.
Seats reserved for women, OBC and ST that will be left vacant will
automatically get transferred to general Muslim applicants. Also,
three percent of the seats will be reserved for physically challenged
applicants according to the Persons with Disabilities (Equal
Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995.
According to the new guidelines, candidates under the persons with
disabilities category will be given a relaxation to the extent of 5
percent marks in the qualifying examination.
Only candidates who suffer from not less than 40% of a physical
disability, certified by a competent medical authority, will be able
to seek admission under this category.
The maximum period for passing a course will be two years for
physically challenged candidates and might be extended by a year under
special circumstances.
The new guidelines have also allotted 5 percent of the seats in all
undergraduate and diploma programmes to be allotted to students of the
university who have passed their qualifying examinations from Jamia
schools and have been on the rolls for five consecutive years.
