New Delhi: The health ministry is planning new regulations under which private medical colleges would be allowed to set up their campuses abroad, similar to their management and engineering counterparts.
The new regulations are being planned by the health ministry after the government and the Medical Council of India (MCI) had been legally challenged by several medical institutions for rejecting the proposed foreign campuses.
The regulations by the health ministry are being planned to ensure that the quality of medical education that Indian institutions would provide in their foreign campuses are not compromised.
The health ministry has also written to the Human Resource Development ministry to seek feedback on the matter.
Currently, the rules of the MCI do not allow the automatic recognition of any medical degree that has been earned outside of India even if it has been awarded by an institution that has its headquarters in India. This means that degrees that are awarded by foreign campuses of Indian institutes have the same status as that of foreign degrees.
Students who have medical degrees from foreign institutions currently have to appear for an MCI screening test before they can begin their medical practice in India.
Institutes that offer course besides medical such as engineering and management are however, allowed to set up campuses abroad based on rules and regulations of the HRD ministry.
Also, deemed universities too are eligible to set up their campuses abroad if they fulfill certain strict regulations that had been introduced by the government in the year 2010.
