AMU to be reopened on May 18

Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has announced that it
will be reopened on May 18 in a phased manner after it had been closed
abruptly on April 30 because of violent overnight clashes that had
occurred between students' groups.

The decision was taken by the Vice Chancellor of the university P.K.
Abdul Azis, the deans of faculties and principals of colleges during a
meeting held on Thursday evening.

The hostel facilities will be provided by the university again for
B.Tech final year and all final semester students of other faculties
from May 16.

The university administration has decided to reopen the university
after VC P.K. Abdul Azis had been silently pushed by the Human
Resource Development (HRD) Ministry to reopen the university as soon
as possible.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal had earlier updated Congress President Sonia
Gandhi regarding the situation at the university that had resulted due
to being shut down after students' groups clashes during which bullets
were also fired.

On Thursday itself, the AMU VC had ordered a search to be conducted of
all hostel room at the university after reports had suggested that the
students might be hiding firearms.

The views of an increasingly worried government have been generally
ignored by the AMU vice chancellor, who is also currently facing
charges of corruption.

It was also decided at the meeting that postgraduate and diploma
examinations in the Faculty of Medicine will be held as per the
schedule that had been announced already.

The University has also decided that the class IX Entrance Test will
be held on May 25, 2011. It was also resolved that Deans of concerned
faculties will submit the complete examination schedule for their
faculties so that it can be notified on the University website.

The Principal, University Polytechnic informed that the I Year theory
papers are over in Polytechnic. However, practical examinations are
left. He proposed that these practical exams be held in the month of
July 2011 to avoid inconvenience to the students.

It was also noted that the second semester in the Faculty of
Management Studies and Research and Faculty of Commerce examinations
will be held in the month of July 2011 as these students have
currently gone for practical training.
